The RoHS Directive (WEEE) restricts the use of six hazardous materials in the manufacture
of various types of electronic and electrical equipment.

The RoHS Directive will ban the placing on the EU market of new electrical and electronic equipment containing more than agreed levels of lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyl (PBB) and polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDE) flame retardants from 1 July 2006. RoHS News

RoHS is often referred to as the "lead-free" directive.

RoHS restricts the use of the following 6 substances:

  • Lead
  • Mercury
  • Cadmium
  • Chromium VI (Also known as hexavalent chromium)
  • PBB
  • PBDE

PBB and PBDE are flame retardants used in some plastics.
